Abstract
1-substituted-2-mercapto(or aminomethyl)benzimidazole compounds of the formula ##STR1## inhibit dopamine-.beta.-hydroxylase activity. Intermediates are also disclosed.

A compound of structure (IA) ##STR16## in which:
- Y.sup.A is a group SR;
- R is hydrogen or C.sub.1-4 alkyl;
- n is 1;
- R.sup.3 and R.sup.5 are hydrogen or halogen;
- R.sup.2 and R.sup.6 are hydrogen;
- and
- R.sup.4 is hydroxy;
- or
- a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or hydrate thereof.

- ##STR17## in which:
- X.sup.2 is N.sub.3,
- n' is 0 to 5 and R.sup.2' to R.sup.6' are selected from hydrogen, halogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl, CN, NO.sub.2, SO.sub.2 NH.sub.2, CO.sub.2 H, CONH.sub.2, CHO, CH.sub.2 OH, CF.sub.3, C.sub.1-4 alkoxy, SO.sub.2 C.sub.1-4 fluoroalkyl or CO.sub.2 C.sub.1-4 alkyl.
