Abstract
Phenyloxazolones are useful as cardiotonics in the treatment of heart failure and enhance cardiac function.

A method of treating heart failure in a patient in need thereof which comprises administering to the patient a cardiotonically effective amount of a phenyl oxazolone of the formula ##STR6## wherein Y is an oxygen or sulfur group;
- and R.sub.1 is a hydrogen, or a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkyl group, R.sub.2 is a phenyl group optionally substituted with one or two members of the group consisting of (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkoxy,
- (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkylthio, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkylsulfinyl,
- (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkylsulfonyl, hydroxy, halogen,
- cyano, carboxy, carb(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkoxy,
- carbamido, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkanoylamino,
- imidazolyl, trifluoromethyl or with a methylenedioxy group.

A method of enhancing myocardial contractile function in a patient in need thereof which comprises administering to the patient an effective amount of phenyl oxazolone of the formula ##STR7## wherein Y is an oxygen or sulfur group;
- and R.sub.1 is a hydrogen, or a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkyl group, R.sub.2 is a phenyl group optionally substituted with one or two members of the group consisting of (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkoxy,
- (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkylthio, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkylsulfinyl,
- (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkylsulfonyl, hydroxy, halogen,
- cyano, carboxy, carb(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkoxy,
- carbamido, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkanoylamino,
- imidazolyl, trifluoromethyl or with a methylenedioxy group.
