Abstract
Additive combinations useful in lubricating compositions containing a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity are described. The additive compositions comprise a mixture of at least one alkyl phenol and at least one amino phenol, each having at least one hydrocarbon-based group of at least about 10 aliphatic carbon atoms. The additive compositions also are useful in fuel-lubricant mixtures for use in two-cycle internal combustion engines. Generally, the additive combinations also will contain a detergent/dispersant.

A composition comprising the combination of
- (A) at least one alkyl phenol of the formula
- (R).sub.a --Ar--(OH).sub.b (I)
- and
- (B) at least one amino phenol of the formula ##STR36## wherein each R is independently a substantially saturated hydrocarbon-based group of an average at least about 10 aliphatic carbon atoms;
- a, b and c are each independently an integer of one up to three times the number of aromatic nuclei present in Ar with the proviso that the sum of a, b and c does not exceed the unsatisfied valences of Ar;
- and Ar is a single ring, a fused or a linked polynuclear ring aromatic moiety having 0 to 3 optional substituents selected from the group consisting essentially of lower alkyl, lower alkoxyl, nitro, nitroso, halo and combinations of two or more of said optional substituents.
A composition comprising the combination of
- (A) at least one alkylated phenol of the formula ##STR40## wherein R' is a substantially saturated hydrocarbon-based substituent having an average of from about 10 to about 400 aliphatic carbon atoms, R" is a member selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl, lower alkoxyl, nitro, nitroso and halo;
- and z is from 0 to 2, and
- (B) at least one amino phenol of the formula ##STR41## wherein R' is a substantially unsaturated hydrocarbon-based substituent having an average of from about 30 to about 400 aliphatic carbon atoms;
- R" is a member selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl, lower alkoxyl, nitro, nitroso and halo;
- and z is 0 or 1.
In the method for lubricating a two-cycle internal combustion engine, the improvement which comprises using a lubricant composition comprising a major amount by weight of at least one oil of lubricating viscosity and a minor amount, sufficient to control piston ring sticking and promote general engine cleanliness, a composition comprising the combination of
- (A) at least one alkyl phenol of the formula
- (R).sub.a --Ar--(OH).sub.b (I)
- and
- (B) at least one amino phenol of the formula ##STR42## wherein each R is independently a substantially saturated hydrocarbon-based group of an average at least about 10 aliphatic carbon atoms;
- a, b and c are each independently an integer of one up to three times the number of aromatic nuclei present in Ar with the proviso that the sum of a, b and c does not exceed the unsatisfied valences of Ar;
- and Ar is a single ring, a fused or a linked polynuclear ring aromatic moiety having 0 to 3 optional substituents selected from the group consisting essentially of lower alkyl, lower alkoxyl, carboalkoxy methylol or lower hydrocarbon-based substituted methylol, nitro, nitroso, halo and combinations of two or more of said optional substituents.
In the method for lubricating a two-cycle internal combustion engine, the improvement which comprises using a lubricant composition comprising a major amount by weight of at least one oil of lubricating viscosity and a minor amount, sufficient to control piston ring sticking and promote general engine cleanliness, a composition comprising the combination of
- (A) at least one alkylated phenol of the formula ##STR43## wherein R' is a substantially saturated hydrocarbon-based substituent having an average of from about 10 to about 400 aliphatic carbon atoms, R" is a member selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl, lower alkoxyl, methylol or lower hydrocarbon-based substituted methylol, nitro, nitroso and halo;
- and z is from 0 to 2, and
- (B) at least one amino phenol of the formula ##STR44## wherein R' is a substantially unsaturated hydrocarbon-based substituent having an average of from about 30 to about 400 aliphatic carbon atoms;
- R" is a member selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl, lower alkoxyl, carboalkoxy nitro, nitroso and halo;
- and z is 0 or 1.
