Abstract
A bacterium of the genus Flavobacterium which utilizes pentachlorophenol (PCP) as its sole carbon and energy source, which tolerates media PCP concentrations over about 250 mg/l, and which may be used in methods of detoxifying PCP-contaminated material.
Claims10
A method of detoxifying pentachlorophenol (PCP) by microbial degradation comprising culturing a PCP-degrading bacterium in an aqueous medium comprising dissolved PCP, wherein said bacterium is a member of the genus Flavobacterium, and is capable of sustained growth in medium concentrations of PCP between 250 mg/l and 400 mg/l as its sole source of carbon and energy.
A biologically pure culture of a strain of the genus Flavobacterium, wherein said strain exhibits sustained growth in media comprising pentachlorophenol (PCP) as the sole carbon and energy source at media PCP concentrations of 250-400 mg/l.
