Abstract
The present invention relates to a vaccine composition for the prevention of infectious diseases comprising an immunogenically-effective amount of a genetically attenuated and stable avirulent bacterial strain derived from a virulent bacterial strain by introducing into said virulent strain by genetic transfer and recombination at least two mutations of the same phenotype which renders said virulent strain avirulent, while permitting said avirulent strain to retain immunogenicity, together with an inert pharmacologically acceptable carrier. It also relates to a method for preparing the vaccine.

A vaccine composition for the prevention of infectious diseases comprising an immunogenically-effective amount of a genetically attenuated and stable avirulent bacterial strain derived from a virulent bacterial strain by introducing into said virulent strain by genetic transfer and recombination at least two mutations of the same phenotype which renders said virulent strain avirulent, while permitting said avirulent strain to retain immunogenicity, together with an inert pharmacologically acceptable carrier.
A method of preparing a bacterial vaccine which comprises:
- altering a virulent bacterial strain by introducing into said virulent strain at least two mutations of the same phenotype, thereby genetically attenuating said strain by rendering said virulent strain avirulent while allowing said strain to retain immunogenicity.
