Abstract
A process for forming monolithic silica glass articles is provided. The process includes the steps of hydrolyzing silicon alkoxide to form a hydrolyzed solution, adding fumed silica to the hydrolyzed silicon alkoxide solution to yield a sol solution, gelling the sol solution to a gel, and drying and sintering the gel to obtain the monolithic silica glass articles.
Claims21
A process for forming a monolithic silica glass article, comprising;
- hydrolyzing a silicon alkoxide in solution to form a hydrolyzed solution;
- adding fumed silica to the hydrolyzed solution in an amount between about 0.2 to 5 mols of silica per mol of silicon alkoxide to form a sol solution;
- gelling the sol solution to form a gel;
- drying the gel to a dry gel;
- and
- sintering the dry gel at a temperature effective to form a glass in order to form a large monolithic silica glass article without cracking.
