Abstract
A particulate trap system for use with a diesel engine includes a first particulate trap in heat exchange relation with the exhaust materials passing through the first exhaust bank, and a second particulate trap similarly located with respect to the second exhaust bank. A first exhaust pipe extends from the first exhaust bank to the inlet of the second trap, while a second exhaust pipe extends from the second exhaust bank to the inlet of the first trap. Each exhaust pipe is sufficiently long to allow some condensation of hydrocarbons in the exhaust materials due to cooling thereof. When the mixture of exhaust gases and condensed hydrocarbons arrives in the respective traps, the temperature is again increased due to the heat exchange taking place, and trap regeneration through combustion takes place.
Claims2
For use with a diesel engine having a first and a second exhaust bank, a particulate trap system comprising:
- a first particulate trap in heat-exchange relation with the exhaust materials passing through the first exhaust bank, at a location substantially immediately downstream of the first exhaust bank,
- a second particulate trap in heat-exchange relation with the exhaust materials passing through the second exhaust bank, at a location substantially immediately downstream of the second exhaust bank,
- each trap having an inlet and an outlet,
- a first exhaust pipe from the first exhaust bank to the inlet of the second particulate trap, a second exhaust pipe from the second exhaust bank to the inlet of the first particulate trap, each exhaust pipe being of sufficient length to allow some condensation of hydrocarbons in the exhaust materials due to cooling thereof,
- and exhaust conduit means ducting exhaust materials from the outlet of each trap to the atmosphere.
