A die forging hammer senses the pressure of striking air and the pressure of lifting air from within the cylinder as well as ram start position. Various empirical information is stored and available to a computer which uses the inputs to compute velocity, ram position, rebound velocity and other pieces of information. In order to use the lifting air data, sequential pressure measurements are made by a microprocessor and stored for analysis and for use in deriving from stored empirical information about machine characteristics ram velocity and related information. Three types of systems are interwoven and may be used separately or simultaneously to control the blow control system. The blow control system itself compares input desired results with computed actual results and enables changes to valve timing to bring the actual into conformity with the desired. The adaptive system derives such information as actual velocity and energy, compares them with the corresponding desired results and makes immediate correction to valve timing in the course of the same blow. The self-regulating system stores information from a sequence of blows and makes a correction when it senses a trend away from the desired input. The process adaptive control senses factors such as forging temperature and forging deformation, which are factors related to the forging process, compares them with norms and make corrections to the valve timing to achieve desired results. Different programs are employed, preferably using algorithms applicable to the equipment in processes to derive desired output or intermediate information.
An energy control system for a compressible fluid impact device having a frame supporting at least one cylinder, a piston within said cylinder and means connecting said piston to a ram whereby said ram may be repeatedly movable relative to said frame from a retracted position to impact position, a driving compressible fluid system, including a compressible fluid supply connected to the cylinder at a position in the cylinder to cause the compressible fluid to drive said ram into impact position, valve means to control intake from the fluid supply and exhaust of fluid from the at least one cylinder, valve control means permitting automatic adjustment of the valve means, a retracting fluid supply connected to the cylinder at a position in the cylinder to return the ram to retracted position, sensing means to sense selected parameters related to kinetic energy only for a limited time no later than the beginning of the output stroke prior to the input of the driving fluid pressure and provide signals representative thereof, means for receiving input data enabling selection of desired kinetic energy output levels for a specific blow, and computer means for receiving signals from the sensing means and the input means prior to that specific blow and after the previous blow and generating an output to the valve control means to adjust the valve means to produce the desired kinetic energy of the blow.
