Abstract
Low levels of surface-active, aliphatic C.sub.16 or greater hydrocarbon-type compounds are used to reduce the rate of evaporation of water from waterborne polymer products such as latex coatings. This increases the wet-edge or open time of the freshly applied coating, improves integrity and adhesion of the dried coating, and reduces skin formation in containers and on application equipment.
Claims18
A process for reducing the evaporation rate of water from aqueous-based polymer compositions to retard skin formation and to extend wet-edge time comprising uniformly adding to said aqueous-based polymer compositions a low level of one or more surface active, aliphatic evaporation-suppressing agents consisting of a saturated, unbranched carbon-carbon chain length of about 16 to about 24 carbon atoms and containing one or more hydrophilic groups selected from ##STR3## wherein X is --H or --CH.sub.3 ;
- n is an integer from 0 to 2;
- y is an integer from 1 to about 4;
- z is an integer from 0 to 2;
- and the sum of n and z does not exceed 2.
A composition of matter comprising a uniform mixture of an aqueous-based polymer product and a low level of one or more surface active, aliphatic evaporation-suppressing agents consisting of a saturated, unbranched carbon-carbon chain length of about 16 to about 24 carbon atoms and one or more hydrophilic groups selected from ##STR4## wherein X is --H or --CH.sub.3 ;
- n is an integer from 0 to 2;
- y is an integer from 1 to about 4;
- z is an integer from 0 to 2;
- and the sum of n and z does not exceed 2.
