A system for the metering of encrypted postage and similar indicia includes a device for printing such indicia and a device for reading such indicia. The printing is accomplished with a dot matrix printer driven by signals obtained from a character generator and an encryption circuit. The reading is accomplished by correlating received characters against a stored array of symbols to determine the presence of a symbol and the comparison of the separated coded data with a reference code to determine the accuracy of the printed material. Thereby, forgery and alteration is inhibited. Alphanumeric characters are utilized for both the data and the code, a group of characters for the data being separated from a group of characters for the code to allow for the reading of the data, while readily extracting the remaining characters for verification purposes.
In a device for printing marks of value, the device including printing means for printing alphanumeric indicia and means for control of the printing means for imprinting alphanumeric indicia representing a value, a system for verifying the validity of the imprinted indicia of value comprising:
In a device for printing indicia of value, said indicia collectively comprising a predetermined visual representation, the indicia being represented by dots and having a plurality of separate portions, the device including a printing means for imprinting the dots and means for controlling the printing means;
A package having an alphanumeric imprint thereon representing a characteristic of the package, said imprint including an encrypted message, the encrypted message being utilized for validating the imprint, the imprint comprising:
A package having an imprint thereon that collectively comprises a predetermined visual representation, said imprint including a means for validating the integrity of the imprint, the validating means comprising:
A package having an imprint thereon which includes a means for validating the integrity of the imprint, the validating means comprising:
In a method for printing postal or similar indicia on a mailpiece employing a device including an alphanumeric character printing means adapted to vary a characteristic of characters printed thereby and a means for controlling the printing means, the method for validating the postal indicia comprising the steps of:
In a device for the metering of postage and similar indicia on a material to be imprinted, wherein the device comprises means for receiving signals corresponding to data relating to indicia to be imprinted, and means responsive to said received signals for imprinting said indicia in the form of alphanumeric characters imprinted at different locations of the material;
A dot matrix printer system comprising dot matrix printer means for selectively imprinting each of a set of a plurality of different alphanumeric characters, with each imprinted character being comprised of a plurality of spaced dots, an input circuit for receiving a plurality of signals respectively corresponding to a plurality of alphanumeric characters to be printed by said printer, means responsive to each of said plurality of received signals for producing a coded signal, said printer means comprising means for varying the position of at least one dot of at least one of said alphanumeric character with respect to at least another dot of the respective character as a function of the identity of at least another character without modifying the identity of the respective character, and means applying said coded signal to said printer means for varying the respective position of said one dot as a function of said plurality of signals, for the purpose of encoding said character for validation.
A dot matrix printer system comprising dot matrix printer means for selectively imprinting each of a set of a plurality of different alphanumeric characters, with each imprinted character being comprised of a plurality of spaced dots, an input circuit for receiving signals corresponding to a set of alphanumeric characters to be printed by said printer, means responsive to said received signals for producing a coded signal, said printer means comprising means responsive to signals applied thereto for enabling the printing or disabling the printing of at least one dot in at least one region of at least one alphanumeric character imprintable thereby in response to the application of a signal thereto without modification of the identity of the respective character, for the purpose of coding said character for validation, and means applying said coded signal to said printer means for controlling the imprinting of said one dot as a function of each character of said set of characters.
In a document representing a determined value and comprised of a substrate and indicia imprinted thereon, the improvement wherein said indicia is in the form of a set of alphanumeric characters each imprinted at a location spaced apart from each other character, at least one of said alphanumeric characters of said set being formed of a plurality of visually distinguishable dots, the positions of said dots of said one alphanumeric character being a function, in accordance with a predetermined relationship, of the identity of another alphanumeric character of said set, the identity of said one character not being a function of the identity of said other character, the value of the indicia relating to said characteristic of the package.
In a device for printing a message on a package including an encryption indicating validity of the message, comprising a source of first signals corresponding to alphanumeric characters coupled to said printing device, the printing device being adapted to print the message in a given font of alphanumeric characters in response to said first signals and being responsive to second signals applied thereto for modifying said font;
A device for reading an encrypted message on a package, the message comprising alphanumeric characters having an encryption dependent on said message and in the form of modifications of the font of the character without change in the identity of the character, whereby the front of at least one character of said message is modified as a function of the identity of another character thereof;
In the method for printing postage markings comprising printing first alphanumeric characters corresponding to a postage value, and applying second alphanumeric characters corresponding to other information;
In the method of printing postage indicia on an object comprising printing a dot matrix indicia, the indicia including a portion providing a visual representation of postage value information and a portion providing a visual represention of other information relating to the mailing of the object, the improvement comprising deriving an encryption signal as a function of both said postage value and other information, and printing a dot in one portion of said dot matrix indicia with a visible characteristic that is a function of said encryption signal without a change of the information visually represented by the respective portion whereby said visible characteristic of said dot is a function of both said postage value and other information and said dot provides an indication of the validity of said indicia.
In the method of printing postage indicia on an object comprising printing an at least partially alphanumeric dot matrix indicia which includes a postage value, said object having other information applied thereto, the improvement wherein said method comprises deriving an encryption signal from both said postage value and said other information, and printing a dot in a character of said dot matrix indicia with a visible characteristic dependent upon said encryption signal without a change of identity of said character, whereby said visible characteristic of said dot is a function of both said postage value and said other information and said dot provides an indication of the validity of said indicia.
Means for imprinting indicia, comprising:
In a device for printing postage on an object, including means for inputting a postage value and means for printing postal indicia on said object that includes said postage value;
A method for printing postal indicia, comprising inputting postage value information related to the mailing of an object, inputting ZIP code information related to the mailing of the package, deriving encryption signals at least from said ZIP code information, and printing said postal indicia with said postage value in human readable alphanumeric characters and including ZIP code information, said step of printing comprising printing at least one character having a visible characteristic that is a function of said encryption signals without a change of identity and is in a portion of said indicia that does not convey ZIP code information in other form.
