Abstract

Intumescent-ablator fire retardant materials, in the form of multi-layers, is described. These materials are used for fire-retardant and heat protective purposes.

Dependent claims

An insulation material for use in heat protective devices which comprises a structure having two or more layers, arranged so that the external layer has a higher melting temperature or temperature of dehydration than any layer, said external layer comprising:

an inorganic salt selected from the group consisting of Al.sub.2 (SO.sub.4).sub.3.16-18H.sub.2 O, AlNH.sub.4 (SO.sub.4).sub.2.24H.sub.2 O, KAl(SO.sub.4).sub.2.12H.sub.2 O, and MgSO.sub.4.7H.sub.2 O, and,
a binder selected from the group consisting of natural rubber, neoprene rubber, silicone rubber, polyester resin, epoxy resin, phenolic resin and hydraulic cement.
