An oxygen-free stabilized solution of hydroxylamine or its salts in water or an alcohol which is stable over a prolonged period which contains an 8-hydroxyquinaldine of the formula I ##STR2## where R and R.sup.1 are each hydrogen, hydroxyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl.
