Abstract
This invention relates to novel herbicidally active sulfonylurea compounds substituted in the positions ortho to the sulfonylurea bridge, agriculturally suitable compositions thereof and methods of their use as preemergent or postemergent herbicides or plant growth regulants.

A compound of the formula:
- ##STR121## wherein R.sub.1 is S(O).sub.n R.sub.5, CF.sub.3, NR.sub.6 R.sub.7, CO.sub.2 R.sub.8, SO.sub.2 NR.sub.9 R.sub.10, ##STR122## OSO.sub.2 R.sub.13, CH.sub.2 OR.sub.14 or Q;
- R.sub.2 is S(O).sub.m R.sub.5, CF.sub.3, NR.sub.6 R.sub.7, CO.sub.2 R.sub.8, SO.sub.2 NR.sub.9 R.sub.10, ##STR123## OSO.sub.2 R.sub.13, CH.sub.2 OR.sub.14 or Q;
- R.sub.3 is H, Cl, F, Br, CH.sub.3, OCH.sub.3 or CF.sub.3 ;
- R.sub.4 is H or CH.sub.3 ;
- R.sub.5 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl;
- R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 are independently CH.sub.3 or CH.sub.2 CH.sub.3 ;
- R.sub.8 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl, CH.sub.2 CH.dbd.CH.sub.2, CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 Cl or CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OCH.sub.3 ;
- R.sub.9 is CH.sub.3 or OCH.sub.3 ;
- R.sub.10 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl;
- R.sub.11 is H, Cl, Br, F, CH.sub.3 or OCH.sub.3 ;
- R.sub.12 is H or CH.sub.3 ;
- R.sub.13 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl or CF.sub.3 ;
- R.sub.14 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl or CF.sub.2 H;
- n is 0, 1 or 2;
- m is 0 or 1;
- Q is ##STR124## W is O, S or NR.sub.18 ;
- W' is O or S;
- R.sub.15, R.sub.16, R.sub.17 and R.sub.18 are independently H or CH.sub.3 ;
- Q is also ##STR125## R.sub.19, R.sub.20, R.sub.22, R.sub.24 and R.sub.25 are independently H or CH.sub.3 ;
- R.sub.21 and R.sub.23 are independently H, CH.sub.3 or OCH.sub.3 ;
- Q is also ##STR126## R.sub.26, R.sub.27, R.sub.28, R.sub.29, R.sub.30 and R.sub.31 are independently H or CH.sub.3 ;
- A is ##STR127## Z is N;
- X is CH.sub.3, OCH.sub.3, OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.3, or OCF.sub.2 H;
- Y is H, NH.sub.2, NHCH.sub.3, N(CH.sub.3).sub.2, CH.sub.3, CH.sub.2 CH.sub.3, CF.sub.3, CH.sub.2 OCH.sub.3, CH.sub.2 OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.3, O(C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl), SCH.sub.3, O(C.sub.3 -C.sub.4 alkenyl), O(C.sub.3 -C.sub.4 alkynyl), OCH.sub.2 CF.sub.3, OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 F, OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 Cl, OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 Br or OCF.sub.2 H;
- and agriculturally suitable salts thereof;
- provided that
- (a) when either one of R.sub.1 or R.sub.2 is CF.sub.3, then the other is also CF.sub.3 ;
- (b) R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are not simultaneously CO.sub.2 R.sub.8 ;
- (c) when either one of R.sub.1 or R.sub.2 is SO.sub.2 NR.sub.9 R.sub.10, then the other must not be S(O).sub.n R.sub.5, S(O).sub.m R.sub.5, CH.sub.2 OR.sub.14 or NR.sub.6 R.sub.7 ;
- (d) when R.sub.9 is OCH.sub.3, then R.sub.10 is CH.sub.3 ;
- (e) when either one of R.sub.1 or R.sub.2 is CO.sub.2 R.sub.8, then the other must not be S(O).sub.n R.sub.5, S(O).sub.m R.sub.5 or NR.sub.6 R.sub.7 ;
- (f) the total number of carbon atoms in R.sub.26 to R.sub.31 combined is equal to or less than four;
- (g) when X or Y is OCF.sub.2 H, then R.sub.2 is Q;
- and
- (h) R.sub.1 cannot be CO.sub.2 R.sub.8 when R.sub.2 is OSO.sub.2 R.sub.13.
