2-(N-substituted guanidino)-4-hetero-arylthiazole antiulcer agents

A compound of the formula ##STR47## or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof, wherein X is NH and Y is CH or N, or

• X is S and Y is CH;
• R.sup.1 is a straight or branched chain (C.sub.4 -C.sub.10)alkyl, (R.sup.3).sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.3 or (R.sup.3).sub.2 Ar(CH.sub.2).sub.n where n is an integer from 1 to 4, the R.sup.3 groups are the same or different and are H, F, Cl, Br, I, CH.sub.3, CH.sub.3 O, NO.sub.2, NH.sub.2, OH, CN, COOR.sup.5, or OCOR.sup.5 and R.sup.5 is (C.sub.1 -C.sub.3)alkyl;
• and Ar is the residue of a phenyl, naphthyl, furyl, thienyl, pyridyl, pyrimidinyl, thiazolyl, or imidazolyl group;
• R.sup.2 is H or (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkyl;
• or when R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are taken together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached, they form pyrrolidino, piperidino, morpholino or 4-methylpiperazino;
• and
• R.sup.4 is H, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.5)alkyl, NH.sub.2 or CH.sub.2 OH.
