A process and apparatus for producing pulp from impregnated cellulose-containing starting materials such as wood, straw, grass, waste materials etc. in a compacting apparatus comprising a shell (1) and two mutually opposite pistons (4, 4') contained in said shell. The material to be compacted is disposed between said pistons and constitutes a resistive electrical load. The pistons are movable relative to each other and the shell is movable relative to the pistons. The impregnated starting materials are digested at a relatively low hydromodulus of 0.5 to 2 with a direct action of heat on the impregnated starting materials in the compacting apparatus at a digesting temperature of 160.degree. to 300.degree. C. The digesting times are short and depend on the digesting temperature.
A compacting apparatus for producing pulp from impregnated, cellulose-containing starting materials, comprising a shell having an interior and a pair of ends, which shell contains on one end thereof a piston having an inner end face and on the other end thereof a shutting means having an inner end face, the interior of the shell and the confronting end faces of the piston and the shutting means defining a compacting chamber which contains the material to be compacted, perforated means associated with at least one of the shutting means, the shell and the piston for supplying and discharging processing fluids to and from the compacting chamber, wherein at least the piston and the shutting means are movable relative to each other, and the shell is movable relative to the piston and the shutting means, and a heating means for heating the material in the compacting chamber.
A compacting apparatus for producing pulp from impregnated, cellulose-containing starting materials, comprising a shell having an interior, an upper end and a lower end, which shell contains on the upper end thereof an upper piston having an inner end face and on the lower end thereof a shutting means having an inner end face, the interior of the shell and the confronting end faces of the piston and the shutting means defining a compacting chamber which contains the material to be compacted, perforated means associated with at least one of the shutting means, the shell and the piston for supplying and discharging processing fluids to and from the compacting chamber, wherein the piston and the shutting means are movable relative to each other and the shell is movable relative to the piston and the shutting means, and a heating means for heating the material in the compacting chamber.
