Abstract
Environmentally stable polymer complexes of processible poly (3,6-N-alkylcarbazolyl alkenes) are disclosed with can be doped to a high electrical conductivity with charge transfer acceptors such as iodine together with a method of making the complexes.
Claims32
An electrically conducting polymer comprising poly(3,6-N-alkylcarbazolyl alkene) having the following structure:
- ##STR4## doped with a compatible charge transfer acceptor selected from the group consisting of I.sub.2, Br.sub.2, HI, HBr, IBr, BF.sub.4.sup.-, CLO.sub.4.sup.-, SbCl.sub.6 or combinations thereof to provide electrical conductivity, wherein R is an alkyl group having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, R.sub.2 is an alkene group having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, and n is an integer having a value between 2 and 500.
A method of making a conducting polymer comprising the steps of:
- polymerizing a mixture of substantially equal molar proportions of an N-alkylcarbazole and an aldehyde in a first solvent in the presence of an acid catalyst wherein said alkylcarbazole is one selected from the group consisting of N-methyl-carbazole and N-ethylcarbazole and said aldehyde is one selected from the group consisting of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde to form a polymer of N-alkylcarbazolyl alkene;
- precipitating said polymer in a non-solvent;
- casting films of said polymer;
- oxidizing said films of said polymer by exposure to a compatible charge transfer acceptor selected from the group consisting of I.sub.2, Br.sub.2, HI, HBr, IBr, BF.sub.4.sup.-, ClO.sub.4.sup.-, SbCl.sub.6.sup.- or combinations thereof.
