Abstract
A method for directing a stream of bulk fibers while simultaneously spraying a solution of high temperature resistant tacky binder material into the stream of fibers. A layer of high temperature insulating fibers on a furnace, kiln, or other surface to be thermally protected may thus be formed. The layer of binder coated fibers is then cured to a monolithic layer.
Claims32
A method for applying a layer of refractory fibers to a surface comprising the steps of:
- directing a stream of said fibers toward said surface;
- coating said directed fibers with a tacky inorganic liquid binder during said step of directing such that said fibers adhere to one another and to said surface;
- and
- curing said coated fibers.
Method for applying a layer of refractory fibers to a surface comprising the steps of:
- diluting a tacky inorganic liquid binder including a temperature resistant clay;
- directing said fibers toward said surface;
- coating said fibers with said diluted binder during said step of directing;
- and
- exposing a face of said fiber layer opposite to said surface to a temperature of at least 350.degree. F.
A method for producing a layer of refractory fibers comprising the steps of:
- directing said fibers in a stream configuration;
- directing a tacky inorganic liquid binder into said stream configuration so as to coat said fibers with said binder causing said fibers to adhere to one another;
- and
- curing said coated fibers.
The method of coating a surface, subject to heat, with refractory fibers in a manner to permit subsequent rapid intense heating of the surface without damage thereto or to said fibers, comprising adding water in substantially equal parts, by weight, to a high temperature resistant liquid binder concentrate to form a solution, spraying onto said surface, bulk high temperature resistant fibers through the nozzle of a spray gun while simultaneously spraying through other nozzles of said gun, a mist of said solution into the spray of said fibers before the spray reaches said surface so as to adhere the fibers together and to said surface and build up a layer of binder coated fibers on said surface, thereafter applying heat of the order of 800.degree. F. to said surface for a time sufficient to evaporate substantially all of said added water to cure said coated fibers, whereby subsequent rapid heating of said surface to about 2,000.degree. F. or higher will not cause thermal shock that would injure said fibers or said surface.
