Abstract
2-Substituted-2-oxazolines are prepared by contacting N-(2-hydroxyalkyl)carboxamides with a small but catalytic amount of a cadmium or zinc salt at an elevated temperature.
Claims10
A process comprising contacting in liquid phase
- (1) a carboxamide of the formula ##STR2## or a carboxylic acid/amine salt precursor of said carboxamide, and wherein R is a hydrocarbon or inertly substituted hydrocarbon group and R.sub.1 -R.sub.4 are independently hydrogen or inert organic radicals;
- with
- (2) a small but catalytic amount of cadmium bromide or iodide or a solution cadmium salt of sulfuric, nitric, hydrochloric, phosphoric, hypophosphorous or sulfonic acid to form a 2-substituted-2-oxazoline.
