Abstract
.alpha.-Cyanoacrylic acid lower alkyl esters, and their corresponding amides, characterized by having a heterocyclic containing mercapto radical as one .beta.-substituent and an alkylthio, alkenylthio or a heterocyclic containing mercapto radical as another .beta.-substituent are useful for treating ulcers and for suppressing gastric acid secretion.

A compound of formula I ##STR5## wherein R.sup.1 is S(CH.sub.2).sub.m --Het in which m is an integer from zero to three and Het is an unsubstituted or monosubstituted heterocyclic selected from the group consisting of pyridinyl, (N-oxide)pyridinyl, the substituent being selected from lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, halo, trifluoromethyl or (CH.sub.2).sub.n COOQ wherein n is an integer from 0 to 2 and Q is lower alkyl;
- R.sup.2 is lower alkylthio, lower alkenylthio or S(CH.sub.2).sub.m --Het wherein m and Het are as defined herein;
- and R.sup.3 is lower alkoxy or amino.
