Abstract
New intermediates and processes for preparing 6-halo-7,8-dihydroxy-1-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-3-benzazepi nes involve the reaction of a p-methoxyphenylglyoxal, lower alkyl hemimercaptal with a 2-chloro-3,4-dimethoxyphenethylamine, followed by a borohydride reduction.

A process for preparing a compound of the formula:
- ##STR2## in which:
- R is lower alkyl of 1-4 carbons, and
- R.sup.1 is chloro or fluoro, comprising the step of reacting a compound of the formula:
- ##STR3## in which R.sup.1 is as defined above, with a compound of the formula:
- ##STR4## in which R is as defined above, in an organic solvent which is chemically inert to the reactants and in which the reactants are substantially soluble.

A process for preparing a compound of the formula:
- ##STR5## in which R.sup.1 is chloro or fluoro, comprising the steps of reacting a compound of the formula:
- ##STR6## in which R.sup.1 is as defined above with a p-methoxyphenylglyoxal lower alkyl hemimercaptal to prepare a thio compound of the formula:
- ##STR7## in which R is lower alkyl and R.sup.1 is as defined above, and reacting said thio compound with a borohydride reducing agent.
