Abstract
An alkyl 3-hydroxy-4-(4-hydroxyphenoxy)pentanoate having the formula ##STR1## wherein R is an alkyl or substituted alkyl group ranging from about 1 to about 18 carbon atoms.

An alkyl 3-hydroxy-4-(4-hydroxyphenoxy)pentanoate having the formula ##STR5## wherein R is an optionally substituted alkyl group ranging from about 1 to about 18 carbon atoms.
A method for the preparation of alkyl 3-hydroxy-4-(4-hydroxyphenoxy)pentanoate which comprises reacting a compound of the formula ##STR6## where R is an optionally substituted alcohol C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 ;
- with hydrogen in the presence of a palladium/carbon catalyst and an ethanol solvent.
