Abstract
An alcohol mixture suitable for combining with gasoline is produced by contacting synthesis gas at elevated temperature and pressure with an oxide complex catalyst containing copper, thorium, an alkali metal and at least one other specific element.
Claims8
A process for producing a mixture of methanol and higher alcohols comprising contacting a gaseous reactant containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen at a temperature in the range of 250.degree. to 350.degree. C. and a pressure of no more than 1500 psi with an oxide complex catalyst described by the following empirical formula:
- Cu.sub.a ThM.sub.b A.sub.c O.sub.x
- wherein
- M is one or more of Ca, Rh, Pt, Al, La, Re, Ru and Pd;
- A is an alkali metal;
- and
- wherein
- a is 0.5 to 2.5;
- b is 0.01 to 1.0;
- c is 0.05 to 0.9;
- and
- x is a number such that the valence requirements of the other elements for oxygen is satisfied.
