Abstract
.beta.-Lactam antibiotics having an .alpha.-formamido substituent on the carbon atom adjacent to the carbonyl group of the .beta.-lactam ring and in particular bicyclic compounds having the partial structure: ##STR1## Intermediates and processes for the preparation of the compounds are further disclosed.
Claims34
A compound of formula (I):
- ##STR44## or a salt thereof wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen, an acyl group, or an amino-protecting group;
- R.sup.2 is hydrogen or a readily removable carboxyl protecting group;
- and Y is:
- ##STR45## wherein Y.sup.1 is oxygen, sulphur or --CH.sub.2 -- and Z represents hydrogen, halogen, alkoxy of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, --CH.sub.2 Q or --CH.dbd.CH--Q wherein Q is hydrogen, halogen, hydroxy, mercapto, cyano, carboxy, carboxylic ester, alkoxy of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, acyloxy, aryl, a heterocyclyl group bonded via a carbon atom, a heterocyclylthio group or a nitrogen containing heterocyclic group bonded via a nitrogen atom.
A pharmaceutical composition useful for treating bacterial infections in humans and animals which comprises an antibacterially effective amount of a .beta.-lactam antibiotic having an .alpha.-formamido substituent on the carbon atom adjacent to the carbonyl group of the .beta.-lactam ring, in combination with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
