Abstract
Novel benzo[b]thiophenes, compositions containing same, process for the preparation thereof and methods of reducing blood pressure and producing diuresis by administration of the compounds and compositions are disclosed.

The compound of the formula
- wherein R.sub.1 is lower alkyl;
- R.sub.8 is hydrogen, lower alkyl, lower cycloalkyl or a group of the formula ##STR31## wherein Y is hydrogen, halogen, lowr alkyl, lower alkoxy or hydroxy and p is 1 or 2;
- W is a carbonyl or a group of the formula ##STR32## wherein R.sub.9 is hydrogen, lower alkyl, lower cycloalkyl or a group of the formula ##STR33## wherein Y and p are as above;
- X is hydrogen, halogen or lower alkyl;
- and n is 1 or 2;
- or the tautomer thereof when W is carbonyl and the geometric isomers thereof when it is other than carbonyl.
