Abstract
A method for activating a methanol synthesis catalyst is disclosed. In this method, the catalyst is slurried in an inert liquid and is activated by a reducing gas stream. The activation step occurs in-situ. That is, it is conducted in the same reactor as is the subsequent step of synthesizing methanol from a methanol gas stream catalyzed by the activated catalyst still dispersed in a slurry.
Claims5
A method for activating a methanol synthesis catalyst for use in a liquid phase methanol process comprising:
- forming a slurry of solid metal oxide catalyst particles in an inert liquid, in a methanol synthesis reactor;
- and
- activating said catalyst by reducing said catalyst particles with a reducing gas stream containing at least 25% hydrogen at a temperature in the range of between 150.degree.-300.degree. C. and a pressure in the range of between 200 and 7,000 kPa at a reducing gas stream volumetric flow rate in the range of between 750 and 3000 liters per hour per kilogram of catalyst.
