Abstract
Hydroxylalkyl hydrocarbyl imidazoline-acyl sarcosine reaction products exhibit good friction reducing and antirust properties when formulated into a variety of lubricants and fuels at low concentrations.
Claims18
A product of reaction obtained by reacting a hydrocarbyl hydroxyalkyl imidazoline and an acyl sarcosine at temperatures of from about 90.degree. to about 250.degree. C. and at atmospheric or higher pressure in a molar ratio of imidazoline to sarcosine of from about 1:1 to about 1:3 wherein said imidazoline has the general formula ##STR2## where R is C.sub.8 -C.sub.30 hydrocarbyl, and R.sup.1 is C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 hydrocarbylene and wherein said sarcosine has the general formula ##STR3## wherein R is as defined above, R.sup.2 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 hydrocarbyl or hydrogen and R.sup.3 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 hydrocarbylene.
A lubricant composition containing a major proportion of a lubricating oil or a grease prepared therefrom and a minor friction reducing or corrosion inhibiting amount of a product of reaction obtained by reacting a hydrocarbyl hydroxyalkyl imidazoline and an acyl sarcosine in a suitable solvent at temperatures of from about 90.degree. to about 250.degree. C. and at atmospheric or higher pressure in a molar ratio of imidazoline to sarcosine of from about 1:1 to about 1:3 and wherein said imidazoline has the general formula ##STR4## where R is C.sub.8 -C.sub.30 hydrocarbyl and R.sup.1 is C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 hydrocarbylene, and wherein said sarcosine has the general formula ##STR5## wherein R is as defined above, R.sup.2 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 hydrocarbyl or hydrogen and R.sup.3 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 hydrocarbylene.
A method of reducing the friction in an internal combustion engine by treating the moving parts thereof with a lubricating oil or a grease prepared therefrom containing a minor effective amount of a friction reducing and/or corrosion inhibiting product obtained by reacting a hydroxyl-containing alkyl imidazoline and an acyl sarcosine in a suitable solvent at temperatures of from about 90.degree. to about 250.degree. C. and at atmospheric or higher pressure in a molar ratio of imidazoline to sarcosine and from about 1:1 to about 1:3 and wherein said imidazoline has the general formula ##STR6## where R is C.sub.8 -C.sub.30 hydrocarbyl and R.sup.1 is C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 hydrocarbylene, and wherein said sarcosine has the general formula ##STR7## wherein R is as defined above, R.sup.2 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 hydrocarbyl or hydrogen and R.sup.3 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 hydrocarbylene.
