A process for preparing a lactone of the formula ##STR11## which process comprises hydrolyzing, under very mild conditions, an alkyl 3-dioxolanyl-2,2-difluoro-3-hydroxypropionate of the formula ##STR12## wherein R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are independently C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl.
