A compound represented by the general formula: ##STR1## where X is a halogen atom, an alkyl group having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms or a cyano group, and R is an alkyl group having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms.

A compound represented by the general formula:
- ##STR38## where X is a halogen atom, an alkyl group having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms or a cyano group, and R is an alkyl group having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms.
A liquid crystal mixture containing a compound represented by the general formula:
- ##STR39## where X is a halogen atom, an alkyl group having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms or a cyano group, and R is an alkyl group having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms.
A liquid crystal display cell which comprises a pair of electrodelaminated transparent substrates disposed in a spaced relation with each other with the respective electrode surfaces facing to each other and sealed along the periphery of the facing substrates, and a liquid crystal composition injected and sealed in the space between the pair of substrates, said composition comprising a compound represented by the general formula:
- ##STR40## where X is a halogen atom, an alkyl group having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms or a cyano group, and R is an alkyl group having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms.
