Abstract
Combustible materials such as fiber is made flame retardant by treating the material with a methanol or water solution containing the newly discovered compound ammoniumtriborate (NH.sub.4.B.sub.3 O.sub.5.3CH.sub.3 --OH) or a methanolic solution of newly discovered methylborate ammonia adduct. These new flame retardants have the ability to penetrate the combustible material when applied as a solution and thereafter be converted in situ to ammoniumpentaborate to result in enhanced flame retardation over that achieved by merely the direct treatment with ammoniumpentaborate with other borate flame retardants.
Claims13
A process for flame retarding natural and synthetic fibers which are subject only to dry laundering, which comprises applying ammoniumtriborate or a solution of ammoniumtriborate to natural fibers, synthetic fibers or mixtures thereof in sufficient quantity to provide a flame retarding amount of borates on said fibers.
A process for rendering flame resistant products manufactured from virgin, processed, reconstituted, or recycled organic materials or fibers, such as newsprints, wood chips, wood shavings, sawdust, wood panels, corn cobs, bagasse, peanut shells, and other dried plant matter which comprises applying to said materials or fibers a solution containing ammoniumtriborate.
A process for rendering flame resistant products manufactured from virgin, processed, reconstituted, or recycled organic materials or fibers, such as newsprints, wood chips, wood shavings, saw dust, wood panels, corn cobs, bagasse, peanut shells, and other dried plant matter which comprises applying to said materials or fibers an anhydrous methanolic solution containing a flame retardant effective amount of methylborateammonia adduct.
Flame retardant fibers which are subject only to dry laundering and which contain ammoniumtriborate wherein said fibers are made by incorporating ammoniumtriborate in situ to produce ammoniumpentaborate.
