A process for producing a refractory material comprising essentially beta'-SiAlON wherein the initial reactants include discrete particles of an SiO.sub.2 source and discrete particles of an Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 source.

A process for producing an essentially beta'-SiAlON refractory material, the process comprising providing initial reactants of SiO.sub.2, Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 and C in discrete particle form.
