In a method of electrochemical regeneration of coenzymes for biotechnical, microbiological, or biochemical purposes, the steps of providing an electrode comprising carbon or a graphitic material to the surface of which is adsorbed a condensed aromatic ring system comprising phenoxazinium ions, phenoxazinones, phenothiazinium ions or phenothiazinones, substituted or unsubstituted, and employing said electrode in an electrochemical cell for the regeneration of coenzymes dihydronicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH), dihydroniciotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH), or analogs thereof.
