Abstract
Macroporous cation exchange resins with sulfonic acid functional groups having polymeric hydrous zirconium oxide and polyacrylic acid contained therein are useful in substantially removing sulfate, borate, bicarbonate and/or phosphate ions from alkali metal salt solutions.
Claims7
A method for substantially removing sulfate, borate, bicarbonate and/or phosphate ions from a NaCl brine feed to an electrolytic cell wherein NaCl is electrolyzed to produce chlorine and sodium hydroxide, said method comprising
- passing said NaCl brine through a vessel containing a particulate, macroporous cation exchange resin composite having sulfonic acid functional groups and having hydrous zirconium oxide and polyacrylic acid contained therein,
- removing from contact with resin composite in said vessel, the NaCl brine with its sulfate, borate, bicarbonate and/or phosphate ions substantially removed, and
- thereafter feeding said NaCl brine to the said electrolytic cell.
