Apparatus for conveying folded sheets along a raceway and in an inverted V-shaped position and moving the sheets to an elevating conveyor which turns the sheets onto their sides where the sheets can then be further moved into a trimmer or stacked or the like. The apparatus provides for safe and accurate transport of the sheets and for movement at a constant velocity so that the sheets can be moved at the high speed of the printing press which is producing these sheets. Also, an orbital type of device is utilized for picking up the sheets from the raceway and like conveyor while maintaining the sheets in their horizontal orientation and then presenting the sheets to the vertical elevating conveyor, all without upsetting the relationship between the sheets in the multiplicity of folded sheets such as a signature. Further, the sheets are moved through a caliper section where the size of the sheets is detected, and any sheets which are not of standard size are then culled out of the stream of sheets by means of a reject gate which removes the non-standard size sheets from the stream. A method is employed to move the folded sheets at a continuous high-speed velocity. The sheets are elevated and then laid onto their side.
Apparatus for conveying folded sheets comprising a first conveyor for supporting the folded sheets in an inverted V-shaped orientation with the fold at the top thereof, a blade-type conveyor in sheet conveyance communication with said first conveyor for receiving the sheets in the inverted V-shaped orientation and having upstanding blades for extending into the fold at locations spaced from one end of the folded sheets, a pair of clamp pads disposed in alignment with said blade-type conveyor and adjacent said blades on opposite sides of the path of said blades for closing onto the one end of said folded sheets, said clamp pads being movable toward and away from each other and also in the plane of movement of said blade-type conveyor, and a powered support on which said clamp pads are mounted for closing said clamp pads onto the folded sheets and for moving the clamp pads away from said blade-type conveyor for removing the folded sheets from said blade-type conveyor.
Apparatus for conveying folded sheets along a path in which the folded sheets are moving, comprising a rotatable support rotatably mounted for rotation in the plane of the path of movement of the folded sheets, a clamp pad mounted on said support on each side of said path and being movable toward and away from each other for gripping and releasing the folded sheets, and a control operatively interconnected between said support and said clamp pads for inducing orbital motion of said clamp pads.
