Abstract
A process is provided for the selective photochemical decarboxylation of alpha-hydroxy carboxylic acids to the corresponding alcohols. The process is enhanced with the use of photo-initiator compounds.
Claims14
A process for the photochemical decarboxylation of an alpha-hydroxy carboxylic acid to form high yields of the corresponding alcohol comprising irradiating a mixture of (a) a solution containing the alpha-hydroxy carboxylic acid and (b) a free radical initiator selected from the group consisting of peroxide and azo compounds.
