Abstract
A process is provided for the photochemical decarboxylation of a metal salt of an alpha-hydroxy carboxylic acid to form the corresponding alcohol wherein the alpha-hydroxy carboxylic acid metal salt is exposed to light in the absence of a photosensitizing agent.
Claims12
A process for the photochemical decarboxylation of a metal salt of an alpha-hydroxy carboxylic acid wherein the alpha-hydroxy carboxylic acid metal salt may be represented by the formula:
- ##STR3## wherein;
- R is hydrogen or an alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkaryl, cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl having 1 to about 20 carbon atoms;
- and
- M is a metal selected from the group consisting of Group IB, IIB, IIIB, IVB, VB, VIB, VIIB, and VIIIB elements, Ce, Al, Ca, Mg and Sn;
- and wherein said alpha-hydroxy carboxylic acid metal salt is present in an aqueous solution at a concentration of from about 0.01 percent to about 50 percent by weight based on the total weight of the solution, and is exposed to light at a temperature between about 0.degree. C. and about 100.degree. C. in the absence of a photosensitizing agent.
