Abstract
Reaction products are prepared from metal oxides and salts and phosphorus compounds containing trivalent phosphorus. The reaction products are useful as flame retardants and smoke suppressants.

A composition comprising a plasticizer and a reaction product of a phosphite/phosphonate of the formula ##STR7## wherein n has a value from 0 to 4 and a compound selected from the group consisting of a metal oxide and a metal salt.
