Abstract
2.beta.-Chloromethyl-2.alpha.-methylpenam-3.alpha.-carboxylic acid sulfone and salts and esters thereof were synthesized and found to be potent inhibitors of .beta.-lactamases.

An ester having the formula ##STR70## wherein R is ##STR71## wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen or hydroxy and R.sup.2 is hydrogen, hydroxy, methyl, methoxy or chloro or a nontoxic, pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt of said ester.
An ester having the formula ##STR72## wherein R is ##STR73## wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen or hydroxy and R.sup.2 is hydrogen, hydroxy, methyl, methoxy or chloro or a nontoxic, pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt of said ester.
