Abstract
Disubstituted ethanes of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.2 is --R.sup.3, --OR.sup.3, --CO--R.sup.3, --CO--OR.sup.3 or O--CO--R.sup.3, R.sup.1 and R.sup.3 each are straight-chain alkyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms and n is 1 or 2, are described. Liquid crystalline mixtures comprising Compound I as well as their use in electro-optical devices also are disclosed.

A compound of the formula ##STR38## wherein R.sup.2 is --R.sup.3, --OR.sup.3, --CO--R.sup.3, --CO--OR.sup.3 or --O--CO--R.sup.3, R.sup.1 and R.sup.3 each are straight-chain alkyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms and n is 1 or 2.
A liquid crystalline mixture comprising at least two components at least one of which is a compound of the formula ##STR39## wherein R.sup.2 is --R.sup.3, --OR.sup.3, --CO--R.sup.3, --CO--OR.sup.3 or --O--CO--R.sup.3, R.sup.1 and R.sup.3 each are straight-chain alkyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms and n is 1 or 2.
An electro-optical cell comprising
- (a) two plate means;
- (b) liquid crystal means disposed between the two plate means and including a compound of the formula:
- ##STR53## wherein R.sup.2 is --R.sup.3, --OR.sup.3, --CO--R.sup.3, --CO--OR.sup.3 or --O--CO--R.sup.3, R.sup.1 and R.sup.3 each are straight-chain alkyl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms and n is 1 or 2;
- and
- (c) means for applying an electric potential to said plate means.
