A machine for finishing substantially cup-shaped blanks that are to comprise the bodies of saucepans or the like has a table on which the blanks slide horizontally, bottom wall down. They are advanced along the table from station to station by a shuttle conveyor comprising opposite horizontal clamping plates that converge edgewise to engage opposite side wall portions of blanks, move forwardly while converged, then diverge and move rearward to an idle position. At one station there is a hole in the table, and each blank is delivered concentrically onto a freely rotatable tail stock which is in a lowered position in said hole with its top surface level with the table surface. The tail stock rises to clamp the bottom wall of the blank against a concentric continuously rotating driver head spaced above the table. After rotational finishing of the blank, a coaxial freely rotatable knockout descends from the driver head, maintaining the blank clamped against the tail stock while the latter returns to its lowered position where its rotation is braked. The knockout then rises into the driver head, ready for the next blank. At a subsequent station a hydraulic press can reform the bottom portion of the blank to a concentric enlarged diameter bulge.
A machine for performing a finishing operation upon a metal container blank having a circular bottom wall and an upright side wall that are concentric to an axis of the blank, said operation requiring rotation of the blank about its axis relative to a tool that engages the blank, said machine being characterized by:
