There is provided a refractory mix comprising an acid stabilized aqueous zirconia sol and an active refractory material in an amount effective to gel said sol.

A method of making a refractory shape comprising mixing an acid stabilized, aqueous, colloidal zirconia sol with a refractory material, said refractory material comprising an active refractory material capable of gelling said sol and being present in an amount sufficient to gel said sol after a suitable non-gel working period, shaping the mix before gelation, allowing the mix to gel and drying the shaped mix.
