Abstract
Carbonates and bicarbonates are removed from the sludge of tar sands tailings ponds whereby solids settle from the sludge more rapidly than in the presence of the carbonates and/or bicarbonates. Hydrolyzed starch is used as a flocculant in the process and alcohol may also be used to assist in the settling and/or to improve the characteristics of the settled sludge for subsequent dewatering.
Claims12
A process for reducing the time for settlement during flocculation of a tailings sludge containing mineral solids obtained from recovery of bitumen from tar sands wherein said sludge, when treated with a starch flocculant, has an induction time before settlement begins, which comprises adding an additive to said sludge to remove essentially all of the carbonate and bicarbonate ions present in said sludge and then adding as said starch flocculant, an effective amount of a hydrolyzed wheat, corn or potato starch obtained by the aqueous hydrolysis of the starch in the presence of an insoluble metal salt formed in-situ, and settling the solids from the sludge.
