## CPC

- C08G 69/26: derived from polyamines and polycarboxylic acids
- C08G: MACROMOLECULAR COMPOUNDS OBTAINED OTHERWISE THAN BY REACTIONS ONLY INVOLVING UNSATURATED CARBON-TO-CARBON BONDS

## Abstract

This invention relates to polyaminoester thermosetting resins prepared by reacting polyalkylene maleate oligomers with polyfunctional amines via a Michael type addition reaction. The reaction is preferably conducted by a RIM process. Alpha, beta ethylenically unsaturated monomers, which are slow to react with amines, may be added to the reaction to copolymerize with the maleate functionality in a post cure step. The polyaminoester thermosetting resins are useful as plastics, coatings, resin modifiers, and elastomers.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A thermosetting polymer composition comprising the reaction product of one or more oligomers of the formula: ##STR6## wherein n represents two to ten maleate units,
R represents alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, or acyloxyalkyl,
and
R' and R" are --H, --CH.sub.3, --C.sub.2 H.sub.5, --CH.sub.2 Cl, --CH.sub.2 Br, --C.sub.6 H.sub.5 (phenyl), --CH.sub.2 OCOCH.dbd.CH.sub.2, --CH.sub.2 OCOC(CH.sub.3).dbd.CH.sub.2, 13 CH.sub.2 OCH.sub.2 CH.dbd.CH.sub.2, --CH.sub.2 OC.sub.4 H.sub.9, or
R' together with R" is --C.sub.4 H.sub.8 --(cyclic), with one or more polyamines.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

Composition of claim 1 wherein the polyamine is selected from the group consisting of: ##STR7##

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

Composition in accordance with claim 1 further including one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers which are copolymerizable with maleates but which react slowly or not at all with amines and remain available for a free-radical initiated copolymerization in the final stage of the thermoset formation.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1, 3)

Composition of claims 1 or 3 wherein the oligomer is polyethylene maleate containing two to four maleate repeating units.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1, 3)

Composition of claims 1 or 3 wherein the polyamine is selected from bis(p-aminocyclohexyl)methane, m-xylene diamine, 1,3-propylene diamine, N,N'-di(aminopropyl)-ethylene diamine, or tetraethylene pentamine.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

Composition of claim 1 wherein the thermosetting polymer is further crosslinked by a post-reaction curing step.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1, 3)

Composition of claim 1 or 3 further comprising one or more of fillers, fibers, fiberglas, antioxidants, inhibitors, colorants or foaming agents.
