## Abstract

A process of bonding a plurality of thermally stable, high strength graphite fiber reinforced glass matrix composite materials is described. The process comprises applying to the surface of at least one of the composite materials to be bonded, a mixture of low softening point glaze such as high lead oxide containing glaze, a high melting point low coefficient of thermal expansion material such as beta-spodumene and colloidal silica followed by hot pressing the composite materials to be bonded together. The resultant bonded articles and the glass compositions particularly adapted for this bonding process are also described.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A glass composition particularly adapted to bonding graphite fiber reinforced glass matrix composite materials together consisting essentially of about 47% to about 50% by weight of a low coefficient of thermal expansion, high lead oxide content glaze containing about 40% to about 60% by weight lead oxide, about 46% to about 49% by weight low coefficient of thermal expansion beta-spodumene, and about 1% to about 7% by weight colloidal silica.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1 wherein the lead oxide glaze contains about 16% by weight boric oxide and about 28% by weight silica.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1 wherein the high lead oxide glaze has a thermal expansion coefficient of about 52.times.10.sup.-7 cm/cm.degree.C., and the beta-spodumene has a thermal expansion coefficient less than 1.times.10.sup.-6 cm/cm.degree.C. from room temperature to 700.degree. C.
