## Abstract

The present invention provides a method for the prevention of renal papillary necrosis induced by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory compounds (NOSAC) comprising the administration of certain prostaglandins.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for the prevention of renal papillary necrosis induced by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory compounds (NOSAC) in a mammal susceptible to said necrosis comprising systemically administering to said mammal an amount of a renal cytoprotective prostaglandin effective to prevent said necrosis.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

A method of claim 1, wherein said mammal is not susceptible to NOSAC-induced gastrointestinal side effects.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

A method of claim 2, wherein said mammal is a human.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

A method of claim 3, wherein the renal cytoprotective prostaglandin is 16,16-dimethyl-PGE.sub.2.

### Claim 5 (depends on 3)

A method of claim 3, wherein the renal cytoprotective prostaglandin is 16,16-dimethyl PGF.sub.2 .alpha..
