- G01F: MEASURING VOLUME, VOLUME FLOW, MASS FLOW OR LIQUID LEVEL; METERING BY VOLUME

## Abstract

Measuring the flowrate of a liquid by directing the liquid to a vertically-positioned collection tube, periodically sensing the height of liquid in the tube, and averaging a plurality of data points to obtain an average flowrate value.

## Claims

a vertically-positioned collection tube with a known volume-versus-height relationship,
means for directing said flowing liquid into said collection tube,

means for receiving said signals and determining the time-averaged flowrate value at the end of said collection interval based on a succession of height-versus-time data taken during said collection interval to avoid distortion of flowrate value owing to said short-term variations.

The apparatus of claim 1 or 4 wherein said means for generating electrical signals is a sonic transmitter and receiver located at the bottom of said tube.

### Claim 7

Apparatus for making a measurement of the ultrafiltration flowrate in a fluid flow transfer device having a first liquid flowing on one side of a semipermeable membrane at a first pressure and a second liquid flowing on the othe side of said membrane at a lower pressue, said ultrafiltration being subject to short-term variations in flowrate, said apparatus comprising,
a vertically-positioned collection tube with a known volume-versus-height relationship,
means for directing a flow of liquid equal in amount to that resulting from ultrafiltration into said collection tube,
means for periodically generating electrical signals representing the height of the surface of liquid in said tube at different times while said height is increasing during a collection interval in which there are short-term variations in flowrate, and
means for receiving said signals and determining the time-averaged flowrate value at the end of said collection interval based on a succession of height-versus-time data taken during said collection interval to avoid distortion of flowrate value owing to said short-term variations.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The apparatus of claim 7 further comprising

a first valve means connected to said first port to block flow through said port while said measurement is being made.

The apparatus of claim 9 further comprising
a second port on said collection tube located above the highest point reached by said surface in said tube during said measurement, and
valve means connected to said second port to allow air above said surface to exit through said second port while said surface is rising and to facilitate discharge through said first port while said first valve means is open and air is being forced into said tube prior to a measurement.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The apparatus of claim 10 wherein said source is connected to said tube through said second port.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The apparatus of claim 11 wherein said means for generating electrical signals is a sonic transmitter and receiver located at the bottom of said tube.

### Claim 13 (depends on 7, 10)

The apparatus of claim 7, 10, or 12 wherein said means for directing a flow comprises
valve means for temporarily blocking the flow of said second liquid into said fluid flow transfer device, and
means for directing all of the flow of said second liquid into said collection tube.

### Claim 14 (depends on 7, 10)

The apparatus of claim 7, 10, or 12 wherein said means for directing a flow comprises
valve means for temporarily blocking the flow of said second liquid into said fluid flow transfer device, and
means for directing all of the flow of said second liquid into said collection tube, and
wherein said first liquid is blood and said second liquid is dialysate, and
further comprising means to initially adjust the dialysate pressure to a value sufficiently high to avoid degassing which would occur at a lower pressure and displace liquid and incorrectly increase the measured amount of liquid collected in said tube.

### Claim 15

A method of measuring the flowrate of a flowing liquid subject to short-term variations in flowrate comprising
providing a vertically-positioned collection tube with a known volume-versus-height relationship,
