## Abstract

A fire-retarding resin composition composed of (a) a thermoplastic resin, (b) about 20 to about 60% by weight, based on the total weight of (a), (b) and (c), of a magnesium hydroxide powder whose surface is treated with an alkali metal oleate, and (c) about 0.1 to about 10% by weight, based on the total weight of (a), (b) and (c), of at least one fatty acid metal salt selected from the group consisting of magnesium oleate and aluminum oleate; and a fire retardant composition for thermoplastic resins, said composition comprising (b) a magnesium hydroxide powder whose surface is treated with an alkali metal oleate, and (c) at least one fatty acid metal salt selected from the group consisting of magnesium oleate and aluminum oleate, the weight ratio of (b) to (c) being from 2 to 600:1.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A fire-retarding resin composition composed of
(a) a thermoplastic resin,
(b) about 20 to about 60% by weight, based on the total weight of (a), (b) and (c), of a magnesium hydroxide powder whose surface is treated with an alkali metal oleate, and
(c) about 0.1 to about 10% by weight, based on the total weight of (a), (b) and (c), of at least one fatty acid metal salt selected from the group consisting of magnesium oleate and aluminum oleate.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1 wherein said magnesium hydroxide powder has
(i) a BET specific surface area of about 1 to about 20 m.sup.2 /g, and
(ii) a x/.epsilon..sub.B ratio, which is the ratio of its average second order particle diameter (x) determined by the LUZEX method to its average second order particle diameter (.epsilon..sub.B) calculated from the BET specific surface area, of not more than about 2.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The composition of claim 2 wherein the alkali metal oleate is sodium oleate.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1 wherein the alkali metal oleate is sodium or potassium oleate.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The composition of claim 4 wherein the alkali metal oleate is sodium oleate.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1 wherein the amount of the magnesium hydroxide powder (b) is from about 30 to about 55% by weight, based on the total weight of (a), (b) and (c); and the amount of the fatty acid metal salt (c) is from about 0.5 to about 6% by weight, based on the total weight of (a), (b) and (c).

### Claim 7

A fire retardant composition for thermoplastic resins, said composition comprising
(b) a magnesium hydroxide powder whose surface is treated with an alkali metal oleate, and
(c) at least one fatty acid metal salt selected from the group consisting of magnesium oleate and aluminum oleate, the weight ratio of (b) to (c) being from 2 to 600:1.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The composition of claim 7 wherein the magnesium hydroxide has a BET specific surface area of about 1 to about 20 m.sup.2 /g, and (ii) a x/.epsilon..sub.B ratio, which is the ratio of its average second order particle diameter (x) determined by the LUZEX method to its average second order particle diameter (.epsilon..sub.B) calculated from the BET specific surface area, of not more than about 2.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The composition of claim 8 wherein the alkali metal oleate is sodium oleate.

### Claim 10 (depends on 7)

The composition of claim 7 wherein the alkali metal oleate is sodium oleate or potassium oleate.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The composition of claim 10 wherein the alkali metal oleate is sodium oleate.

### Claim 12 (depends on 7)

The composition of claim 7 wherein the weight ratio of (b) to (c) is from 3 to 120:1.
