## Abstract

Diethylcarbonate is chlorinated with dry chlorine gas in the presence of ultraviolet rays to give ethyl .alpha.-chloroethyl carbonate in a good yield. The chlorination is preferably carried out, with or without a carbon tetrachloride solvent as a reaction medium, at a range of temperature of 45.degree. to 55.degree. C.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A process for preparing ethyl .alpha.-chloroethyl carbonate having the formula: ##STR7## which comprises chlorinating diethylcarbonate having the formula: ##STR8## with chlorine gas in the presence of ultraviolet radiation.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The process according to claim 1, wherein the reaction temperature ranges from 45.degree. C. to 55.degree. C.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The process according to claim 1, wherein the amount of chlorine gas used is 1.2 to 1.4 moles per mole of diethylcarbonate employed as a starting material.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The process according to claim 1, wherein carbon tetrachloride is employed as a reaction medium during chlorination.

### Claim 5

A process for preparing ethyl .alpha.-chloroethyl carbonate, comprising chlorinating diethylcarbonate with 1.2 to 1.4 moles of chlorine gas per mole of diethylcarbonate in a carbon tetrachloride reaction medium maintained at a temperature in the range of 45.degree. C. to 55.degree. C. in the presence of ultraviolet radiation.
