## Abstract

The present invention provides a method for preliminary treatment of molten iron from a blast furnace wherein only desiliconization of the iron is effected. Gaseous oxygen is injected into the molten iron by controlling its supply rate depending on the Si content of the molten iron in such a manner that said rate is increased if the Si content of the iron is high and decreased if the Si content is low.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of preferential desiliconization of molten iron by injecting gaseous oxygen wherein the gaseous oxygen is injected into the molten iron at controlled a rate depending upon the silicon content of the molten iron so as to satisfy the formula (I):
0.03.ltoreq.V.sub.O.sbsb.2 .ltoreq.1.25 [%Si]-0.075 (I)
wherein V.sub.O.sbsb.2 : the rate of gaseous oxygen feed Nm.sup.3 /min/ton pig,) and [%Si]: Si content of the molten iron (%).

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1 wherein the rate of gaseous oxygen feed V.sub.O.sbsb.2 is controlled depending upon the silicon content of the molten iron so as to satisfy the formulae (II) and (III):
0.03.ltoreq.V.sub.O.sbsb.2 .ltoreq.0.80 [%Si]-0.075 (II)
V.sub.O.sbsb.2 .gtoreq.0.16 [%Si]-0.01 0.03.gtoreq. (III)

### Claim 3 (depends on 1, 2)

A method according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the rate of gaseous oxygen feed V.sub.O.sbsb.2 is reduced stepwise or continuously.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1 wherein the gaseous oxygen is supplied through a lance immersed in the molten iron to a depth of at least 200 mm.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The method according to claim 4 wherein the gaseous oxygen is supplied through a consumable lance.

### Claim 6 (depends on 4, 5)

The method according to any one of claims 4 or 5 wherein the energy for agitating the molten iron is controlled by varying the amount of a protective coolant that is used to protect the immersed lance from elevated temperatures.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method according to claim 6 wherein an agitating gas is mixed with the gaseous oxygen supplied for desiliconization.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The method according to claim 7 wherein the agitating gas is injected from the bottom and/or side of a container which contains the molten iron being desiliconized.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The method according to claim 8 wherein the energy of mechanical agitation is used to further increase the oxygen utilization in preferential desiliconization.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1 wherein a coolant is used to control the temperature of the molten iron being desiliconized.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The method according to claim 10 wherein solid iron oxide is used as the coolant.
