## Abstract

Antimicrobial agents suitable for use in aqueous systems for their preservation against biodeterioration include substitutedpiperidinomethylpropenenitriles and propanenitriles. The unsaturated compounds are prepared by reaction of a suitable piperidine with cyano acetic acid and formaldehyde: the propane derivatives therefrom by nucleophilic addition.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A compound of the formula: ##STR11## where Z is ##STR12## R" is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkyl, benzyl, or phenethyl; R is in the 2-, 3-, or 4-positions and is hydroxy or hydroxyalkyl; R' is amino, loweralkylamino, or diloweralkylamino; n is an integer from 1 to 4; m is the integer 0 or at least 1; and X is a suitably charged anion.

A compound according to claim 2 where n is 1.

2-Cyano-1-dimethylamino-3-(4-hydroxypiperidino)propane.
