Abstract
New surface-active phosphonic acid esters, which are inter alia suitable as emulsifiers and dispersants, a process for their preparation and emulsions and dispersions of water soluble polymers containing the new phosphonic acid esters and having high stability on storage.

Phosphonic acid esters of the formula ##STR15## wherein R.sub.5 is is an unsubstituted, straight-chain C.sub.8 -C.sub.22 alkyl, alkenyl or acyl radical, R.sub.6 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or alkenyl radical optionally substituted by an --OH, --CONH.sub.2, --(COO)C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl or phenyl radical, R.sub.7 is methyl or ethyl radical, z is an integer of from 2 to 30 and m=0 or 1.
